Abstract
The study examined the performance of candidates in English Language and Literature-in-English in the West African Senior School Certificate Examinations. The researchers obtained results of the West African Senior School Certificate Examinations for 2014 and 2015, involving a sample of 1,488 candidates in 19 secondary schools in Gombe State. The study revealed a significant difference between the performance of candidates in the two subjects. Performance in English Language was found to be better than that of Literature-in-English. Teachers??(TM) responses to a question on the factors responsible for candidates??(TM) better performance in English Language were summarized and presented for analysis. Based on the factors identified, recommendations were made for improved teaching and learning. Typically, teachers should ensure that the two subjects complement each other through methods of teaching. Furthermore, they should insist on students acquiring relevant textbooks.
