Abstract
This paper investigated the effect of bibliotherapy on low academic self- concept among secondary school students in Gombe local government area of Gombe State. One research question was raised and one hypothesis was formulated to guide the study. The design of the study is quasi experimental research design. The population for the study of students with low academic self- concept were 1110.The sample of the study was 70 students which were selected through purposive sampling technique. Academic self- concept survey scale instrument was used for data collection with the reliability coefficient of o.84.The data collected was analysed using mean, standard deviation and analysis of co-variance at 0.05 level of significance. From the findings it was revealed that bibliotherapy is effective in improving low self -concept of secondary school students and also there is significant difference in the posttest mean score of students treated with bibliotherapy and those of the control group. With this it was recommended that bibliotherapy technique should be adopted by school counsellors and other allied professionals as an effective treatment technique in improving academic self-concept of secondary school students.
